And a tremendous Hou Hsian-hsien film it is, a film which perfectly captures the spirit of the cell-phone/nightclub era, resonating from a subtle ennui which attacks the background with vibrant electronic colors. But that is not the point of this post. This is the list movie_freak fans have been waiting for, the elite list of post 2000 films, which for the very first time expands to a top 35. The films on this list are likely to be the only one in my personal top 250. I appreciate the artistic quality of every single film here, not to say that I don't like any more films this decade, but that this list is a demonstration of what I believe to be the finest achievements In other words, it's in a tier all on its own.

Yers are so boring, Fweaky...
01. Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone 2006)
02. Stiletto Dance (Mario Azzopardi 2001)
03. Brokeback Mountain (Ang Lee 2005)
Then Garden State, then Collateral. That's all I like.
How is it that you're always first to comment? Amazing.
I'll be back later with my thoughts.
"28. Sex and Lucia" - sexy btw.
I have seen all but Pride and Prejudice, which I didn't intend to see at all. No big changes I think. Why is Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress so high? It should be replaced by....The Hours. :)
What problems did you have with Balzac? I'll admit to the simplicity, but I like how it was free from melodrama. However, the depiction of Maoism era felt a little caricature. It's probably going to drop.
Still can't warm up to the Hours in any case.
I honestly don't remember anything from it. It's kinda boring I think, lol. Sad to see that von trier drop.
He didn't really drop much as much I've come to the realization that Spirited Away and Mulholland Dr. are just better. They might both be objectively of the top five this decade. And Mystic River and Hero, I think I just enjoy more. I really hated the singing in Dancer in the Dark, otherwise I like it just fine.
You're one to talk, Sen. Weren't you the one who questioned me about my letter writing habits? I mean, seriously.
Millenium Mambo >>>> Three Times
need to see: 12, 20
don't like: 16, 22, 24, 11
The absence of Elephant and Memories of Murder sadden me.
Btw, which part of Three Times is your favorite, freak? Mine is the first one, and if you pick the second one, you'll deserve to replace dan in that list.
Haha. Shang, you're totally right about Three Times.
LOL. I think that's the greatest thing you ever said. Shangy I mean. Your name sounds like you're a leader of a Chinese military army.
It's the first, and I think everyone I know's favorite is the first, except for Shep, who prefers the 2nd, but he's hard to figure out so he didn't even include him on our mega list. And Three Times haters should die.
And sen, what do you think of the flash-to-the-past narratives and the pale white shots of nowhereness in Sex and Lucia?
twas good, twas all good. shot on dv, making use of natural light. dreamy, kinda magical, but still real. yeah... i liked it.
and hawk, you suck!
"and hawk, you suck! "
No need to state the obvious, senna
Oh does my name really sound that cool? It was you that called me like that first...don't remember when...And I actually think the third part of TT is the best although I don't care for it and I'm not that dreary to appreciate it. The first part was sweet enough to make me re-think Hou's work though. Sadly he did the horrible second part. Hou should have cut 40 min of The Wayward Cloud to cover it. Oh, and I just rewatched Chicago...a 10/10 without a doubt, [laugh]..
Chicago and The Hours your favorite mainstream american films of the decade?
Mystic River + Brokeback Mountain... here, probably, although Brokeback still has a few moments that left me cold.
I think both The Hours and Chicago are not typical mainstream. I really like The Hours's introspection and I totally understand the Chicago haters. My favorite is LIT though. For now at least because I don't know if I'll put The Hours ahead of LIT one day. MA is great enough.
Brokeback Mountain left me cold and confused (by the plot) at times.
And...I think I'm going to put Shawshank back in my list, er...
LIT isn't mainstream-styled at all though.
Chicago has always been one to be adored for laughs, didn't hit me at all though. And the Hours.... well meh, I guess. What about the Pianist?
Didn't like it at all. Overrated, and not really a Polanski movie.
I count LIT as mainstream because it's nominated at oscars. And it's neither a Hou nor a Tsai nor a PTA.
"Hou should have cut 40 min of The Wayward Cloud to cover it."
LOL. Great!
